In Conakry, the capital of the Republic of Guinea, West Africa, close to Madina market, the largest market in Conakry, there is a place called “La Casse”. La Casse is full of scrapped vehicles. Its inhabitants have been accused of supporting the ruling party and even of having taken part in clashes against opposition supporters. Although disparaged as a controversial place, “La Casse” is also a paradise where scrap metal and urban waste can be transformed into noble materials in the gifted hands of the “scrap tailors”.
