12 French voters with various background, located in Paris area, in south-west of France and in Belgium share their electoral expectations
A few days before the second round of the presidential election in France, several polls have suggested a likelihood of a significant voter transference to incumbent president, Emmanuel Macron. However, as time goes by, anonymized figures make us forget the singularity of voters. Continue...
Without claiming to be exhaustive or to be a statistical projection of actual voting intentions, this series aims to portray 12 French voters with various background, located in Paris area, in south-west of France or in Belgium; 6 women and 6 men, including two public figures; a former nurse, an independent artisan, a trade union executive, a sports journalist, a former PS executive, a micro-entrepreneur, a sales executive, two civil servants, a lawyer, an artist and an executive in a social housing management company. Each of those 12 voters was asked to choose an emblematic place for the portrait session. A few days before the second round, each of them was also asked to comment on the chosen location and to express his or her electoral expectations and, optionally, voting intentions for the second round.
Belgium, Brussels Capital Region, Woluwe Park, 11/03/2022, Boris FAURE, married, 2 children, 48 years old, author, former executive of the Socialist Party, executive of the UNSA trade union
What does this place mean to you? This sick tree is the sad symbol of current politics: it is powerless in the face of financialized capitalism, in the face of multinationals that weigh more than states in economic terms. The cankers that colonize its trunk are perhaps the symbols of everything that paralyses political life: populism, abstention, the internal violence of democratic world. But if we take a closer look at the tree, there are grounds for hope: there are parakeet nests in its trunk, little green birds capable of adapting everywhere.Continue...
What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic? Politics must rekindle the colors of the plumage of these initially exotic birds, which have adapted to life in Brussels.Given the results of the first round, will you vote in the second round? I voted for one of the budgie candidates in the first round. A left-wing candidate who could have adapted to the needs of the citizens. To send a signal. For the second round, I will cast my ballot for Macron despite Macron. I am not a Macronist, I tried to see a new rocardism, I could pretend to believe in it but I do not have special appetite for it. However, Emmanuel Macron is a republican and a sincere European. These are two solid reasons to vote for him, and because, on the other side, even a cat-loving like Marine [far-right leader] will always have a programme that lacks tenderness. The dirty beast, she’s still scratching. I am a member of the Socialist Party, the « Republican Spring » [secular] movement and the trade Union Unsa. These three memberships seem to me to be coherent with each other. They commit me to contribue to block [far-right]. But in front of the ballot box we are always alone. The polling booth is there to remind us of this. Since the beginning of the week, I have spent some time ruminating in the booth of my mind. I have reflected, had moments of anger, lucidity and melancholy. Sometimes I feel worn out with my 30 years of activism behind me. Sometimes, on the contrary, I discover myself to be seasoned in a time that demands mobilisation and the mobilisation of like-minded people. An aggression does not dictate a vote (* ). An aggression does not sum up my life nor alter my convictions. And an expired quinquennium cannot dictate a vote on its own. Only my ethics of responsibility count in the deceptive and dangerous context of the moment. Yes, dangerous. So it will be Macron. Despite Macron. And for the Republic. What is your reaction to outgoing president Emmanuel Macron’s reelection? It’s a relief at first. The dam worked, but it’s obviously taking on water. There is no great joy after this victory by default. The hardest part begins. A second five-year term in which the president will want to go “faster and further” in some respects is worrying. The legislative elections must be a corrective. If not, the third social round may be violent.
*The decision in the trial of the assault on Boris Faure with a helmet by the led-president majority deputy M’jid El Guerrab in 2017 was issued on 12 May 2022. The MP was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, including one-year prison term (through the use of electronic monitoring bracelets) and two years’ ineligibility.
France, Maubourguet (65), former theatre, 05/04/2022, Caroline LAUZIN, single, no children, age unspecified, plastic “anartist” and “a-musician”
What does this place mean to you? The idea immediately came to me to go to the old theater of Maubourguet, the village to which I exiled myself since July 2020. First of all, as a militant act to try to save this theater from abandonment, whereas there are so many artists who cannot find a place to express themselves. In this theater, I have chosen not to sit on the stage. I have nothing to do on the stage during these elections. I am a mere and powerless spectator. Continue...
I don’t look towards the stage. Nothing happens there but despair. Besides, I am alone and I dream of another stage on which another play would be performed that would put smiles on our faces, fill us with poetry and the power of democratic life. The hypnotized crowd did not choose a president ‘in conscience’. No. It was the media that orchestrated this election. Like the previous ones. It’s a play with just a different cast. That’s why I don’t vote. I understood, very early on, in 1982, when my father ran in local elections, that he should not overshadow another candidate about to be parachuted in by [former president] François Mitterrand. So I saw how my father was dragged into the mire. My father had extraordinary abilities. Self-taught, he was highly respected as an insurance broker. Nothing to do with the insurance profession today. I like to quote him. Many people say good things about him, and testify to his very human commitment to helping others. In this place where I am posing for this photo, the alchemy is reversed. Red announces chaos, the green colour of ecology belongs to the past. It is better to work on something else than politics. The inner being, for example. What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic?Well, I expect the worst. Neither the candidate Le Pen, who will abolish the healthcare, which has been already so shamefully managed. Nor Macron, who managed the health crisis like a real dictator, was given the right to bypass the regular vote of laws [through the use of the article 49.3 of the Constitution] from February 2020, and to impose measures that no extremist candidate would have dared. Moreover, his proposal to reform the French Active Solidarity Income would create a form of forced labour, of slavery. The calculation is quickly done: with this proposal, a new class of worker already in precariousness, would be paid about 6.66€/hour, and would not contribute to pensions. Even the father of Marine Lepen [former French far-right leader] would not have deigned to propose such ignominy. We are also heading straight for the wall of totalitarianism, with this population control pass. The rule of law is in danger. The revival of nuclear power is a huge failure for climate change issue. There is nothing about the rights of animals, nor about the rights of trees and waterways to live on this earth in a different way. Given the results of the first round, will you vote in the second round? I see no reason to sing the same tune as the last election. Our democracies are caught in the throat. Various inequalities are spreading within the political space. The scenario of a poorly elected president, by a population under media hypnosis, will happen again. The constitution should evolve. A majority of blank votes in the second round should be allowed to invalidate the election and to open the door to a third round. What is your reaction to outgoing president Emmanuel Macron’s reelection? No surprise. I knew Macron would be elected, that’s the plan. CLEAR. Concerning the legislative elections, Macron has nothing to propose as regards to ecology, he has nothing for the nature, for the animals. I hope Mélenchon [the far-left candidate] will be well placed. Poor nature is suffering. We must not forget the rights of trees and rivers.
France, Paris 11, Republic Square, 2022-03-02. Romane O, 50 years old, divorced, no children, trade union official (CFTC).
What does this place mean to you?It is in my view a symbol of the power of freedom, the French Republic and fraternity. What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic? In accordance with my trade union commitment, based on humanist values, I expect the next president to preserve the values of liberty, equality and fraternity enforced over the last fifty years for the benefit of French citizens.Given the results of the first round, will you vote in the second round? Probably. Not for the RN [Lepen-led far-right movement], because it doesn’t offer me enough guarantees as regards brotherhood. What is your reaction to outgoing president Emmanuel Macron’s reelection? Reaction: as expected, macron is the Pres ! Legislative hope: « La France Insoumise” [Mélenchon-led far-left movement], the green, the French communist party, LR (right wing movement) MPs in majority. Meaning: non-hegemonic Macronist MPs !
France, Maubourguet (65), 05/04/2022, Annick B, divorced, 3 grandchildren, 65 years old, retired nurse
What does this place mean to you? It’s a return to nature, a return to the basics. Finance rules us and I want to return to simple values for the family globally speaking, without forgetting the elderly. What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic? I don’t know much about politics. I feel concerned about people’s daily lives. Continue...
I would like to see a government that is a bit more humane, that raises the salaries of low-paid workers, like cleaners and carers. When I worked as a nurse in hospital, I saw carers working with their hearts, collecting last wishes, spending time with the suffering people, but being granted any real consideration in return. I liked François Ruffin who has been talked about these things. We need more staff and psychologists in hospitals. Dying with dignity is also a subject that is of particular interest to me. Belgium and Switzerland are more advanced than France in the field of euthanasia. I favor alternative medicine, of course not for serious pathologies like cancer. To deal with Covid, we wanted to sell vaccines. But have they proved their effectiveness? At school, we need to improve the teaching of culture, ecology and civic education. Parents don’t really play their role anymore either. Mothers often have to cope alone with their disabled child. Sometimes they have to go abroad to send their disabled child to school, for example to Belgium. I would also like to see better care for battered women. In the countryside, too much emphasis has been placed on large mall centers. There are no longer any shops in the villages, nor are there any public services. Small maternity wards, post offices and courts have been closed. Everything has been brought together in the big cities. Racism and anti-Semitism must be punished more severely. Protecting the environment, promoting organic farming, fighting against animal mistreatment, reducing plastic packaging are also instrumental. Given the results of the first round, will you vote in the second round? I have always voted. This is the first time I’m wondering who to vote for. I am disappointed with politics. I certainly don’t want to vote for Le Pen. With the fear that has been induced by the so-called pandemic, I don’t want to cast my ballot for Macron. I’ll be very annoyed. Voting white is useless. Jean Lassalle says that blank votes should be taken into account. For the second-round vote, truly speaking, I’m still hesitating… I’m thinking about it… again and again. What is your reaction to outgoing president Emmanuel Macron’s reelection? Completely disappointed. For the legislative elections, I will see, but my vote will be for the planet, for the ecologists. I would support a cohabitation.
France, Lézignan-Corbières (11), 21/04/2022, Nicolas RANDOVSKI, in a relationship, two children, 58 years old, independent craftsman
What does this place mean to you? This is the travel section of the media library in Lézignan. Travelling means free time. Taking the time to live, to discover. My concern at the moment is retirement. I am 58 years old. I’ve had an atypical career during which I’ve changed jobs several times, with training courses in between, and therefore with big gaps in my pension contributions. I don’t even know at what age I will reach the full rate. I don’t know if I’ll still be fit to enjoy life and travel when I retire. When you’re a craftsman, with injuries, it’s a bit complicated. I’m not a reactionary, but it’s not like with some special schemes whose beneficiaries hold the power to demonstrate to be effectively retired at 50-55. What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic? As a craftsman, I think that Macron has done the job during the Covid crisis, in terms of social costsand aid. Continue...
I think he’s not bad. Afterwards, he has a rather right-wing policy. I hope that the next president – at least I imagine Macron – will have a slightly more social policy, towards Mélenchon, and a slightly more ecological one, towards Mélenchon and Jadot. Macron is doing the job. I would just like him to be a bit more left-wing. I don’t expect anything else from him. Given the results of the first round, will you vote in the second round? Yes I repeat myself, I will vote, for Macron, and certainly not for Le Pen.What is your reaction to outgoing president Emmanuel Macron’s reelection? Macron was elected. I voted for him. For the legislative elections, it’s good that he has a majority even if I don’t like everything in his programme. I do not favor a cohabitation. But I want a strong opposition so that he doesn’t have the full powers. I am for ecology. I like the “France Insoumise” [far-left movement] programme but not some figures of the movement. I haven’t really followed the local political dealings. My vote will also be determined by the people who will run locally.
France, Colombes (92), 03/03/2022, Stadium Yves du Manoir – Chérif GHEMMOUR, 58-year-old, sports journalist, musician and co-founder of So-Foot French magazine
What does this place mean to you? Colombes Stadium represents one of the permanent features of the city where I was born and where I still live today. This monument dedicated to sport may have been the origin of my vocation as a sports journalist. In any case, this stadium is a bridge between the past (the 1924 Olympics, the 1938 Football World Cup) and the future (the 2024 Olympics). Now being spoiled, it will be destroyed and redeveloped to host 2024 hockey competitions. What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic? French presidential election of April 2022 has confirmed my vision of a blocked French society, Continue...
split between a “bourgeois bloc” and a “popular bloc” itself split between « La France Insoumise » [far-left movement]and the « Rassemblement National » [far-right movement]. I fear that the bourgeois bloc, the likely winner of this election, which now includes « La République En Marche » [outgoing president’s movement], the Socialist Party, « Les Républicains” [right movement]and « EELV » [green movement], will accelerate the Americanisation of French society. Americanisation is the professional « uberisation process, widespread precariousness, the privatisation of certain institutions that used to be regalian and finally the essentialisation of individuals reduced to their ethnic origin, their religion or their gender. The imported American model, which induces a violence in social relations that the French have no idea of, would decisively undermine the more egalitarian foundations of our Republic. And as in the case of the bourgeois bloc, the Melenchonist Left and the Lepenist Right neutralise by their antagonism any popular perspective of alternation. So for the moment I don’t expect much from the current political game which is in a situation of deadlock. I am not making any bets or forecasts about the future. I am keen to debate with others with the aim of trying to safeguard the common ideal carried by the French National Council of the Resistance from 1944 period. What is your reaction to outgoing president Emmanuel Macron’s reelection? My reaction on the spot. French legislative elections should confirm the victory of LREM [reelected president’s movement], with the help of the Socialist Party, « Les Républicains” [right movement] (Sarkozy is doing it very well) and EELV » [green movement] (Jadot is chafing at the bit). The bourgeois bloc, then. Majority to be expected. But I don’t know how big it will be. The « Rassemblement National » [far-right movement] could win a few seats… « La France Insoumise » [far-left movement]should win many more seats but certainly not enough to send Mélenchon to « Matignon » [French Office to the Prime Minister]. What’s more, now, « La France Insoumise » will also be the target of the “republican front” against the extremes… Many triangular elections are to be expected: if the first round of legislative elections confirms the first round of presidential elections, we could even see a LREM wave. The price index this summer and in the autumn will inevitably correct this electoral sequence…
France, Paris 17, new courthouse, 09/03/2022, Alice L., in a relationship, 2 children, 51 years old, general practitioner lawyer with a focus on criminal law
What does this place mean to you? This monumental courthouse opened in April 2018. It is undoubtedly an architectural feat with a huge budget but in the same time represents the evolution of our profession: registries are now only accessible to lawyers by following a standardized authorization process. Access to hearings, although thy are public, is drastically controlled. The location of all similar hearing rooms is determined in advance, as at the airport. It is displayed on electronic boards in the entrance hall. This is the material embodiment of the dehumanization of our justice system. Continue...
In this place, I see, much more than in the past, the degradation of our judicial system, which is both harder to access and at the same time much more poorer. The unprecedented (to my knowledge) recent demonstration by the magistrates provides a kind of evidence in this regard. What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic?I would have liked a President who governs in the interest of the greatest number and not for GAFA and finance interests. To preserve justice, health and education, which are constantly deteriorating due to lack of resources. My expectations turn now to legislative elections, if the Parliament is not flouted, thanks to a new state of emergency, allowing to adopt instrumental measures by bypassing the institutions without debate or vote.Given the results of the first round, will you vote in the second round? In my lifetime, we have never gone this far in terms of crackdown and infringement of fundamental freedoms, and this has started long before the COVID epidemic. Macron is clearly from the right wing. He is the incarnation of a decadent and completely insane ultra-liberalism at a time of global ecological crisis and depletion of our resources. I even find him dangerous and I am not keen to listen to his ministers, some of whom have been indicted. However, although I have sworn the true opposite, I will cast my ballot because I fear that the extreme right will end up being elected, given all the above.
France, Paris 15, Jardin Atlantique, 04/03/2022, François, single, no children, 58 years old, French civil Servant executive
What does this place mean to you?It it the liberation of Paris, the end of Nazism in Paris. Jean Moulin united the resistance, was the creator of the Resistance National Council, he was the one who did not speak under torture and incidentally, a Bitterois, although I am originally from the Caroux region near Béziers through my French family. What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic? At this stage none. Because I don’t believe in the providential man or woman. According to me, the President of the Republic plays a key role in upholding the institutions and the national unity, Continue...
he is the one who must protect the country in the event of a major crisis, whether internal or external, and who heads the Council of Ministers. So he is the guarantor of the proper functioning of the executive. It is up to the Prime Minister to rule the country on a day-to-day basis, because he is accountable to the Parliament, unlike the President, who only challenges his mandate during elections. I am against the election of the President of the Republic by direct universal suffrage, as this voting system focuses all expectations of citizens and tensions on one person. And as far as the next term of office is concerned, I would like we talk about serious things: the purchasing power of French people, environmental issues, the future of young people, reinstating civic-mindedness and culture among young people, and putting an end to the obsession with migration, because immigration is a sovereign domain in the hands of the State. And this obsession leads to confusion between asylum and immigration. And let’s put an end to the indiscriminate hatred of Muslims. Let’s start to understand that there are issues around immigration that are so obvious that it is not necessary to make them a campaign topic. The system has become so restrictive that in order to satisfy even temporary needs, people are forced to disguise themselves as asylum seekers. There are other subjects that lead presidential candidates to exploit voters’ anxieties, topics that are related to immigration such as communitarianism, or access to employment in general. Much more sensitive problems are forgotten, such as the social situation and access to employment for young people, and the continuation of European construction with France more often acting as a brake than as a driver. The crises in Ukraine and Mali have also demonstrated the inability of our country in 2022 to assert our foreign policy choices.Given the results of the first round, will you vote in the second round? This goes without saying. As I could not come to the polling station on the day of the vote, I gave my proxy to a friend. I will vote for Emmanuel Macron. What is your reaction to outgoing president Emmanuel Macron’s reelection? Le Pen lost, that’s good! Let’s get ready for the legislative elections…
France, Paris 3, Square Saint-Gilles – Grand-Veneur – Pauline-Roland, 09/03/2022, Catherine B., single without children, 58 years old, micro-entrepreneur in real estate
What does this place mean to you?An undisclosed square away from the hustle and bustle of Paris. There is a healing calm here. I find nature refreshing and even if it’s artificial, chlorophyll remains chlorophyll and that’s always good to take. What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic? I lost my job during the first lock-down. When I was unemployed, I trained as a real estate sales agent, which led me to create my own micro-business. Since September I have found a full time job with a permanent contract which is much less paid than my previous jobs so I continue my real estate activity to make ends meet. My electoral expectations: I realize that I don’t expect anything from this election because the facts are stubborn and prevent me from believing in the political word. Continue...
Some subjects are not dealt with properly and have not been so for years: Retirement? Everyone passes each other the buck, but it will be necessary to work longer while seniors will struggle to find work. Health, the hospital and its staff are in agony. The care of the disabled and the elderly is a disgrace. The justice system and the police are under-equipped and poorly housed. The homeless and refugees are still on the streets. Islamism is a cancer that has been spreading for years. The place of women in this context is questioned. All these veils and ghostly camisoles make my ovaries knot. The struggles of the first feminists seem far away. Wherever I look it is disturbing.Given the results of the first round, will you vote in the second round? The secrecy of the polling booth means something to me, so I won’t say whom I’m going to vote for, even though preventing the far right from governing France is taken for granted. Yes, I will vote because it is a precious right and I would be ashamed not to go, but it will be without conviction. What is your reaction to outgoing president Emmanuel Macron’s reelection? I am against the extremes both far-right and far-left, especially since the notion of secularism is unknown to them. So preventing “La France Insoumise” and other movements who have reached shocking agreements for legislative elections.
Belgium, Brussels Capital Region, Woluwe Saint-Lambert, 14/03/2022, Laurent T, married, 1 child, 50 years old, civil servant on leave, Saint-Lambert Church
What does this place mean to you? Being at the feet of the representation of Christ reflects what I, as a Catholic, feel when I come into contact with my Lord: transcendence, the unity of the creature with its creator, but also communion with all the members of the Church, the universality of the message of the Gospels. What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic? Ideally, I expect a Head of State to fully assume this singular and particular thousand-year-old history of the French Nation and to be able to accompany it at a time ofincreasingly complex and uncertain future. He/she must also be aware that he/she is only the custodian of something mysterious that goes beyond him/her. This is what one would expect from a King, a true Sovereign! But more prosaically, he/she should be able to gather the French around a unifying project so that an end can be put to this deconstruction dynamics and permanent destruction to which the current incumbent of Elysée Palace Continue...
– and before him his two predecessors – have devoted themselves during their five-year term. Damage done by ultra-liberalism to the private and public working world, the deadly Anglo-Saxon influence of the so-called “progressive” ideologies at school and universities, the dilution of France into an inconsistent global environment which makes it lose its external power and weakens it considerably internally, makes me extremely sad. Given the results of the first round, will you vote in the second round? I am still in a state of amazement even though I expected this configuration. My astonishment is gradually being replaced by a certain expectation and I might putting France’s fate in the hands of Providence. But I still have a few days to make my mind up. But, in any case, the mantra of “tactical voting” or of the necessary and indispensable “block to the RN [Lepen-led far-right movement]” will not have affect me, nor my decision. What is your reaction to outgoing president Emmanuel Macron’s reelection?Unsurprisingly, Macron was re-elected. His triumphalism is matched only by the bliss of the people who gave him a mandate to continue his work of destroying everything that is popular and French. I am waiting to see the result of legislative elections. The assembly must regain its role and not become a mere recording chamber.
France, Paris 14, rue de la Gaieté, Fabienne BOUTIER, married, 1 child, 57 years old, manager in a social housing organization
What does this place mean to you?For me, cafés and café terraces are places of exchange, of gathering, especially after the lock-downs we have experienced. And above all they are places of freedom for women. What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic? I expect the next president to take radical measures in terms of ecology and as regards the fight against climate change. This implies, for example, not not to bow to lobbies, to certain agrochemical lobbies that are against a ban on pesticides even though their use has been leading to the disappearance of bees in particular.Given the results of the first round, will you vote in the second round? Yes For Macron. Not out of conviction but to block the far right. What is your reaction to outgoing president Emmanuel Macron’s reelection? Regarding the election of Mr Macron, Continue...
I feel relieved that Le Pen failed to be elected and I am waiting to see what E. Macron will propose when he speaks about a different governance. I dare to hope that these are not simply words. I hope that people will engage for the legislative elections, notably in support of the left-side and especially the ecologists, so that the latter ones have a real political weight.
France, Maubourguet (65), 31/03/2022, Pauline P, single, no children, 30 years old, sales manager in a company producing organic hive-related products
What does this place mean to you? This place gives me a feeling of calm and fulness. It allows me to refocus after a busy day. I tell myself that these trees have been here for hundreds of years, they have survived numerous trials and turbulent times, so why not us? What do you expect from the next President of the French Republic? I think it is a pity that ecology and environmental issues are not more central to election programmes.Given the results of the first round, will you vote in the second round? Ironically, I am one of the French voters who have been removed from the electoral roll without being informed, I discovered a few days ago that I am unable to vote until the legislative elections… I would like the citizens become engaged and united during this second round in order to block far-right. And I would quote Paul Valery: “The world acquires value only through its extremes and endures only through moderation; extremists make the world great, the moderates give it stability ».
